Test: 9 summer tyres compared

Last year, Auto Club Europa compared 9 summer tyres from intermediate brands. For its 2021 tyre test, the ACE Lenkrad magazine has decided to return to a standard test with 9 summer tyres from all brands in the size 225/45 R17, fitted on a Volkswagen Golf. The following tyres can also be fitted on vehicles such as the Audi A3, A4, BMW 1, 2 and 3-Series, Honda Civic, Mercedes A, B and C Class, Peugeot 308, Seat Leon or the Toyota Corolla.

For this comparison, the purchase price is a decisive criterion for the final ranking given that the tyre performances are so close.

Summer tyres test: very close results

The 9 tyres tested were all good and obtained at least the recommended rating from ACE Lenkrad. Indeed, the final scores are very close and the magazine notes that the performance of all tyres has improved. In dry conditions, the tyres tested provide a very high level of performance, whether in handling or braking tests. ACE Lenkrad even underlines that all tyres would have obtained the “very recommended” rating if it were not for a few weaknesses, for some, in wet conditions.

This is the case for the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2, Laufenn S Fit EQ + and BF Goodrich Advantage tyres, whose lower aquaplaning resistance prevents them from ranking higher. On the other hand, these 3 tyres are amongst the best for low fuel consumption. They remain safe in wet conditions delivering short braking distances.

Although the Continental tyre is only “recommended”, this is due to its noise and high price which prevents it from obtaining the higher ranking. Otherwise, it has one of the shortest braking distances in the wet, just behind the Michelin Primacy 4 and is the best in this category on dry surfaces. For handling, its performance is faultless with a precise steering response and high grip.

Test: top 5 best summer tyres

The Michelin Primacy 4 has everything to be the best tyre of this comparison test. It has the best wet braking performance requiring two metres less than the Continental tyre, which comes second for this test criterion. For handling, it provides a well-balanced performance in both dry and wet conditions.

Although it falls in line for aquaplaning by delivering a safe performance, its price, the highest of this comparison, prevents it from winning this test. Otherwise, it is equal with the test winner in terms of pure performance.

The Maxxis Premitra 5 and Falken Azenis FK510 tyres deliver excellent results in wet conditions while delivering good performance in the dry. The very good aquaplaning resistance of the Maxxis tyre, when cornering or in straights, allows it obtain a high ranking despite its braking distances which are longer than the others.

In dry conditions it has a very good steering response. The Falken tyre is the best in wet conditions with short braking distances, dynamic handling and good safety reserves. These two tyres take advantage of their very good price / performance ratio to take their place on the podium.

Despite a slight, but not critical, tendency to oversteer, the Nokian Wetproof offers a good performance balance and short braking distances. Without standing out in any of the test criteria in particular, it has no real weaknesses.

The best value for money summer tyre for 2021 is the Nexen N’Fera Sport SU2. Very good in the wet, it is above all the best tyre of this comparison test in dry conditions, particularly in handling tests. The South Korean tyre manufacturer achieves this performance while being the second cheapest tyre of the comparison, and as such, wins this test
