Renewal of the Primacy range

In our recent article on this year’s AutoExpress tyre test, we mentioned that Michelin was working on a new tyre. However, even we weren’t prepared for the surprise launch of the new Primacy 4 at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This tyre, which took 3 years to develop, addresses the manufacturer’s concerns regarding planned obsolescence in the tyre industry.

Prioritizing safety and tyre life

With a strong technological base in the Primacy 3, Michelin looked to take safety performance to the next level with its new tyre. The French manufacturer's primary aim was to provide lasting tyre performance, from first use right until the tyre wears down to the legal tread limit.

For this reason, Michelin asked two independent test organisations, TÜV Süd Automotive and Dekra, to carry out tests on Primacy 4 tyres and its competitors that had been worn down to 2 mm of tread. The result? The average braking distance of the new Michelin tyres was 2.8 m shorter than that of its competitors with the same tread depth.

According to Michelin, this performance is down to the use of latest generation elastomers that allow the tyre to sustain a high level of wet grip throughout its life. Changes have also been made to the tyre’s tread pattern. The trapezoid grooves on the Primacy 3 have been made more rectangular to improve water dispersal even once the tyre reaches late stages of wear.

Michelin claims that the Primacy 4 will last much longer that its competitors: an average of 18,000 km longer to be precise. So that the driver knows when its time to change the tyres, a ‘Michelin’ marking has been added at the base of the grooves in addition to the conventional wear indicators placed at 1.6 mm.

The Michelin Primacy 4 tyre will be launched in January 2018 and will come in 64 sizes for 15-inch to 18-inch rim diameters.
