Multi-compound technology for optimum performance

Michelin will supply Pilot Sport 4S tyres in the size 255 40 ZR21 102Y at the front and 265 / 40ZR21 105Y at the rear for the BMW X3 M and X4 M. In order to meet the German car manufacturer’s requirements in terms of performance, the front tyres feature Michelin’s Tri-Compound technology and the rear tyres use Bi-Compound technology. This multi-compound technology uses different rubber compounds on different parts of the tread.

For Michelin engineers, the objective was to develop tyres providing excellent dry grip, good balance on wet surfaces, good track endurance as will as a sporty driving feel, typical of the BMW. To meet the specifications, the French tyre manufacturer was obliged to design the different characteristics of the tyre with only the tread pattern and its compounds.

A successful partnership

The Pilot Sport 4S* is the result of three years of co-development work between BMW M and Michelin. During the development phase, several hundreds of prototype and pre-production tyres were tested on the Nürburgring track in Germany and on the Miramas and Ladoux test tracks in France. As a result, the Michelin PS4S* provides a unique balance between grip, comfort and safety to offer BMW X3 M and X4 M drivers an enjoyable drive.
