Winter tyres – not only for snow!

Although winter tyres are often called snow tyres, they are in fact not only designed for driving on snow but more generally for safer driving in cold conditions.

Tyre rubber hardens in the cold. Below a certain temperature, summer tyres will solidify and lose their grip.

The rubber used in winter tyres is specifically designed to prevent solidifying at low temperatures thus offering optimal performance in cold weather. Winter tyres also have deeper tread and more sipes which act like studs to maintain good grip and traction on wet surfaces as well as on snow and ice.

When should I change my tyres for the winter?

In the UK, there is no specific legislation on winter tyres and no compulsory date for changing your tyres.

The best indication of when to change from summer to winter tyres is the temperature. As soon as the temperature drops below 7°C, it’s time to fit your winter tyres.

If you haven’t been keeping an eye on the thermometer, another good reminder of when to fit your winter tyres is when the clocks change to winter time.

rezulteo recommends:

If you want to buy winter tyres, don’t leave it to the last minute. If you plan ahead you’ll get a better deal and avoid the risk of finding the tyres you want are out of stock. Generally speaking, when the temperature drops, demand increases and the price of winter tyres rockets.
