Can a run-flat tyre be repaired after a puncture?

Run-flat tyres are reinforced tyres that allow you to continue driving after a puncture. With a punctured run-flat tyre, you can drive up to 50 miles at a maximum speed of 50 mph,  giving you plenty of time to drive to the nearest garage.

However, while driving to the garage, your under-inflated run-flat tyre will be subjected to high stresses that can damage its internal structure. In most cases, the tyre will be too badly damaged to even consider repairing it.

For safety reasons, most tyre manufacturers do not recommend repairing run-flat tyres. Our experts at rezulteo agree: in the event of a puncture, we recommend that you replace the punctured run-flat tyre with a new one rather than try to repair it. Also, don’t forget that you should have your new run-flat tyre fitted by a professional, given the special technology in run-flats and their connection to your vehicle’s TPMS system

Exceptions to the rule

Tyre manufacturers opinions vary as to whether their run-flat tyres can be repaired or not. The decision depends on the type of run-flat technology used and whether the damage to the internal structure of the tyre is reversible or not. Only a tyre professional is qualified to verify this.

Finally, tyre manufacturers, such as Pirelli and Continental recommend that you don’t take the risk and always replace a punctured run-flat tyre with a new one.
