BMW X3, the ever popular SUV
First Yokohama, then Kumho and now Hankook! The South Korean tyre manufacturer has signed a deal with BMW to supply OE tyres for the new X3. For this partnership, Hankook will supply two different tyres: the Ventus S1 evo2 SUV summer tyre and the Winter i*cept evo2 SUV winter tyre in 225/60 R18 104 H XL.
Since its launch in 2003, the BMW X3 has been a pioneer in the European SUV segment. With over 1.5 million units sold, the German car manufacturer has given its X3 a facelift. More exclusive and more comfortable, this new generation of BMW's premium compact SUV required tyres capable of delivering high performance and driving stability.
BMW passed on these requirements to Hankook, which was tasked with supplying tyres that maintained the sporty reputation, agile character and comfort of the X3 range. The manufacturer’s Ventus S1 evo2 SUV tyre was fine-tuned with these points in mind. It features a specially adapted bead filler that, according to Hankook, provides the necessary rigidity to ensure high steering precision. Layers of heat-resistant hybrid textile have been added to the tyre’s structure, allowing it to withstand the high temperatures caused by speed. As a result, the manufacturer says that rolling resistance and rolling noise have been significantly reduced.
For the Winter i*cept evo2 SUV, Hankook has focused on optimising the tyre’s track performance in winter conditions. 3D sipes applied to the entire tread area are designed to reduce block movements and wear for additional driving stability and improved handling. The tyre also has a highly dispersible nano-silica compound to prevent it from hardening at low temperatures, while ensuring better grip on wet and snow covered roads. Again, Hankook claims that its winter tyre offers low rolling noise and reduced noise pollution when driving.
“Our summer and winter tyres are now being used as original equipment not only for the BMW 7 Series but also for the BMW X3. This is a testament to the engineering performance of our tyre developers and proof of the high quality of our products,” said Tony Lee, Vice President Marketing & Sales at Hankook Tire Europe. “Hankook’s investment in its own winter testing ground ‘Technotrac’ in Ivalo, Finland, which provides us with a very good basis for the development of winter tyres for original fitment as well, is certainly paying off on the European market, which is a very important market for us.”
