Junya Watanabe takes inspiration from motor sports in the 1970s
Pirelli wanted to mark the Paris Fashion Week by collaborating with Junya Watanabe Man, a designer known for his Comme des Garçons fashion label. The Japanese designer took inspiration from Pirelli motor sport jackets in the 1970s; jackets which were worn by the tyre brand’s technicians at the tracks where races were held. Junya Watanabe helped the Italian tyre manufacturer to make a fashionable appearance in Paris with a capsule collection of four new items.
After launching the new calendar, Pirelli continues to reach out to in couture and lifestyle topics.
The collaboration highlights the Italian tyre brand with the iconic red and yellow logo featured. The Pirelli and Junya Watanabe Man collection presented at the 2020 Fashion Week in Paris includes two overcoats, one jacket and one T-shirt. Watanabe has drawn inspiration from both vintage fashion and from new synthetic materials to confirm his “Techno Couture” status. A modern and nostalgic line of clothing that also underlines Pirelli’s predominant position in motor sports. Which goes to show, the tyre manufacturer realised long ago that the combination of luxury, lifestyle and motorsport works very well and opened concept stores for Pirelli tyres worldwide.
