SUV sports tyre accessible to all

After an absence of 11 years at the Geneva International Motor Show, Michelin returns to the most important automobile event in Europe. And it has not come empty handed. The tyre manufacturer will present its new sports tyre for SUVs: the Pilot Sport 4 SUV. Replacing the Latitude Sport 3, it features all of Michelin’s latest technologies and its expertise in the Pilot Sport range which has proved its worth. With this tyre, the French brand wants to become the benchmark for high performance tyres for high end, sporty SUVs.

Technology committed to driving pleasure

In terms of sportiness, Michelin knows what to do. For this new tyre, the manufacturer has combined a certain number of technologies developed in motorsport and in particular, for the Formula E.

For the tread, Michelin has chosen an asymmetric design. The outer part has been developed to deliver a high level of performance in dry conditions whereas the internal part is optimised for wet conditions. The new compound mix with functional elastomers, improves the distribution of silica in the tyre, which significantly improves tyre grip on all surfaces. In addition, the tread grooves are designed to help the tyre remain rigid while improving its lateral grip.

Thanks to its optimised architecture and tread design, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV can also adapt its contact patch to the road for more control and better grip. Finally, the tyre is equipped with the “Dynamic Response” technology, a belt with aramid and nylon reinforcement which optimises steering precision.

The new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV also offers excellent longevity thanks to rigid blocks on the tread pattern and a two-layer casing ply for more robustness

On the design side, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV has “Michelin Premium Touch Technology” sidewalls with a velvet touch. A high end design that corresponds to the style of sporty SUVs which also has a rim protector to prevent any direct contact with pavements.

Convincing test results

For this new sports tyre for SUVs, Michelin has called upon TÜV SÜD, an independent German test organisation. TÜV SÜD subjected the Pilot Sport 4 SUV to several tests and compared it with 6 of its competitors. Wet braking when new and when worn, dry braking, speed on wet roads and lifespan in kilometres: the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV dominates each criterion.

On dry roads from 100 km/h, it stops 1.8 metres shorter than the average of its competitors. On wet roads, in new condition and at 80 km/h, its stopping distance is 3.15 meters less than the average of its competitors. In the same conditions but with worn tyres, its braking distance is 5.2 metres shorter than the average of the 6 other tyres. In terms of performance, it is 0.96 to 5.06 seconds faster than its competitors on a wet circuit, 1,050 metres in length. It is also ahead of them for longevity where is can be driven between 3,300 to 13,600 kilometres more.

In 2019, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV will be available in 53 sizes for 17-inch to 23-inch rim diameters including 18 sizes not yet covered by Michelin.
