A methodical development

After the Porsche GT2 RS and GT3, Michelin is turning to Ferrari owners. The French tyre manufacturer has announced that its ultra-sporty Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyre has been approved and will be available as original equipment on the latest Ferrari 488 Pista. This new tyre, which is marked K1, has been specifically designed for this exceptional super car and its twin-turbo V8 engine producing 720 hp. Homologated for the road, it will allow drivers to get the best sports potential out of this supercar, with a maximum speed of 340 km/h.

Michelin has developed its tyre to meet Ferrari’s requirements, particularly in terms of maximum grip for track driving. Test drivers from the prancing horse brand have worked alongside the tyre manufacturer’s engineers to develop this special tyre. They have used “TameTire”, a tyre modelling simulation software developed by Michelin, to test the PSC2 R virtually before undertaking track tests. Thanks to this solution, Michelin’s ultra sporty tyre has seen its ground contact patch increase by 10% to deliver 5% more grip than the standard version of the Pilot Sport Cup 2.

“The challenge was to push the limits of grip of the 488 Pista even further. Thanks to the "R" version of the Pilot Sport Cup 2, we have made a big gain in lap time performance while maintaining the driving pleasure and responsiveness that are the characteristics of the Ferrari 488 Pista”, said Pierre Chaput, the engineer responsible for developing the tyre for this supercar.

A record-breaking tyre

Porsche and Michelin joined forces on a 911 GT2 RS then on a GT3 RS with Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres on the Nürburgring track. The result: a lap time of less than 7 minutes to make the GT2 RS the fastest road-legal car ever on this legendary track.

The semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R K1 is already available as an option for the Ferrari 488 Pista in the sizes 245/35 ZR20 95Y at  the front and 305/30 ZR20 103Y at the rear.
