Renault Megane RS Trophy-R, Bridgestone tyres for a new record on the Nürburgring

Renault has just presented the Megane RS Trophy-R, expected to be the best performing compact sports car ever marketed. Its efficiency has been proved at the Nürburgring track through a record breaking lap time. Among the many changes made to it, the Megane RS Trophy-R is now fitted with the ultra high performance Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres.

Nürburgring has become the subject of a full-scale technical, marketing and commercial war for some car manufacturers who propose compact front wheel drive sports cars in their sales catalogues.

As such, over the last few years, the “fastest front wheel drive” car around the German track has been held by several car manufacturers such as Seat (Leon Cupra), Renault (Megane RS 275 Trophy R), or even Volkswagen (Golf GTi Clubsport). Until today, the record was held by Honda with the excessive Civic Type R which seemed impossible to beat given its impressive performances.

But Renault has hit hard by presenting the Megane IV RS Trophy R, since the French car manufacturer has said loud and clear that it would crush the competition. With as its main argument, a lap time of 7’40’’100 on the Nürburgring track; which is more than three seconds faster than the Civic which held the record.

Hand-picked suppliers

To improve its Megane RS, Renault has worked with the best specialist suppliers: Brembo for the brakes, Akrapovic for the exhaust system, Öhlins for the suspension, Sabelt for the bucket seats and Bridgestone for the tyres.

The semi-slick S007 was chosen, a tyre designed for exceptional sports cars, and only available in large sizes (17 to 20 inch rims). The result is unbelievable efficiency due to the grip these tyres deliver, but also their seamless operation with the running gear.
