Official launch of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4

Michelin has just officially unveiled its latest sports tyre, the Pilot Sport 4. Replacing the undisputed PS3, the Pilot Sport 4 claims to be focused on driving pleasure without sacrificing safety aspects. So, let’s introduce this newcomer.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 was officially unveiled at the last Frankfurt Motor Show. It has now been launched on the market.

Competition in the sport’s tyre segment is rife. Goodyear will present its Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 in a few weeks, Continental has just launched its SportContact 6 and other new tyres are expected during 2016. The Pilot Sport 4 arrives amidst the frenetic renewal of tyre ranges which is no coincidence. Indeed, the sport’s tyre segment continues to grow, notably thanks to the increased market share of large tyres on new vehicle fleets.

For premium saloons and sports cars

Michelin insists that the development of this tyre is based on two major research sources:

  • Its analysis laboratory which examines the behaviour of several thousands of drivers in Europe thanks to an electronic unit placed in their vehicles.
  • Its experience in motorsports, notably inFormula E where the types of races share many similarities with driving constraints: 18-inch tyres, for races held on "road asphalt", etc.

The positioning remains exactly the same as that of the Pilot Sport 3. This tyre can equip small sports cars such as the Clio 4 RS, the Mercedes SLK coupe, saloon cars like the Audi A6 or even compact cars: Volkswagen Golf, Seat Leon and the Honda Civic.

What changes

Compared with the PS3, the PS4 has been developed to further enhance the driving experience and create a sportier feeling, better steering response, and logically, provide even more driving pleasure. To achieve this, it has a reinforced belt, with the same technology used for the Pilot Super Sport, which ensures optimum stiffness and a larger contact patch. The tread pattern and the special tread compound work together to deliver all the sportiness and versatility to be expected from this type of tyre.

Michelin also claims that the tyre delivers better all-round performance (compared with the PS3) without, however, announcing any specific gains.

Available now

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is now available in 19 different sizes for 17 and 18-inch rims. Other sizes will be available in 2016 and 2017. However, this tyre will not be produced for 15 and 16-inch rims, sizes for which the Pilot Sport 3 will continue.
